Due to the nuclear and aircraft industry rapid development, Inconel 718 has been used more and more. However, it is classified as difficult-to-machine materials due to low thermal conductivity, strong tendency to weld and form built-up edge and work hardening. In this research, the turning characteristics of Inconel 718 were performed by various cutting rake of Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) tools and compared the cutting characteristic of two different workpiece- precipitation hardening & non-precipitation hardening. Experimental results showed that a negative rake tool is more suitable for the fine-turning than a positive rake tool. It was found that the Inconel 718 with precipitation hardening cut by the CBN tools could get a better cutting surface, especially, when the cutting speed was 75 m/min. This cutting speed was 2~3 times than the tungsten carbide tools. So, the better way for the cutting Inconel 718 with CBN tools was to precipitate hardening the Inconel 718 before the fine-turning. Hence, using CBN tools for fine-turning can substitute for fine grinding and reduce the cutting time.
