It is one important index in insulation life. So it is the most fragile factor in electrical reliability. The maintenance of power equipments is like to the health inspection people,so it should be paid attention to some information from electrical installations. It can prevent both power failure and accidents. For prevented maintenance, it is necessary to know the partial discharges characteristic including occurring of discharges, recurrence discharge, theorems, characteristic and some important parameters. This paper presents the insulator as an object to performed partial discharge detected by acoustic emission method with an ultrasonic detection system. The theme of this paper at first is to discuss about the occurrence of partial discharges then describes the recurrence of discharges, primary measuring technology in partial discharge. We attempt to apply above descriptions with an ultrasonic microphone sensor in processing acoustic emission pulse generated by partial discharges. The paper describes the measured acoustic signals and analysis of the frequency spectra, in addition to some present test conditions, we also consider the other circumstantial factors. Some results of experiments, will be displayed, analyzed, interpretation the occurrence and the affect of the parameters. We attempt to catch any message when the power equipment will be resulted to abnormal or damage. To seek enough time to fix the equipment and avoid accident. Result of this research proposes that the detection of partial discharge by acoustic emission method with ultrasonic detection system is good for insulators prevented maintenance, is like to “equipment doctor”.
