碩士 === 中國文化大學 === 音樂研究所 === 90 === Kuo Tzu-chiu, a successful person studying on his own, tried his best to make perfect. In an end, he has made a breakthrough from hardship. His choral work “Memory” has been well-received by public, chiefly because of his conception of to be popularized. In addition to his unselfish dedication to music education, he has gained a good name of “Father of Hualien music.” This thesis focuses on Kuo Tzu-chiu’s choral works. The study is aimed to explore the style and characteristics of Kuo’s works by the way of Kuo’s music background and of analysis of his works. Then through the analysis, it may grasp the connotation of music writing. This study may offer music lovers some understanding of Kuo’s choral music and references for some other researchers. There are 5 chapters in the thesis. They are(1)Preface: motives, purposes, study scope, methods and limitations. (2)Background: Kuo’s musical background in chronological order. (3)Analysis: major choral works being studied. (4)Exploration: Kuo’s musical style being put together and collected. (5)Summary. Through the study, Kuo’s choral works has the following traits: (1)Kuo’s compositions are well-connected with the trend of his musical background. (2)Kuo’s music mingles with Taiwan folk music and emphasizes his native language. (3)His music is mixed with “harmony in poetic music” and “simplicity in feelings” of the traits of Taiwan folk songs. (4)His creation influenced by the actual living. (5)Kuo’s music has the conception of being popularized. (6)Kuo’s musical ideal is passed down through music education.
