Specimens were set in the vicinity of top surface of the salt bath to simulate the corrosion behavior of the inner surface of the salt bath crucible, and another set of specimens were placed outside the salt bath crucible but near the heating element of the furnace to simulate the corrosion behavior of the outer surface of the salt bath crucible. After the corrosion tests, specimens were examined with its appearance and microstructure, and the corrosion products were identified with X-ray diffraction, EPMA and EDAX. The results show that (1) for specimen under high temperature atmosphere, the SUS 310 with higher chromium content had a better corrosion resistance than SUS 316; (2) for specimen submerged in the salt bath, SUS 310 had a larger total corrosion depth than SUS 316, and this is possibly due to a low oxygen partial pressure in the salt bath which would enhance the lose of chromium; (3) for specimen above the surface of salt bath, the total corrosion depth were deeper for higher location, and SUS 310 had a better corrosion resistance than SUS 316; (4) for specimen section located too far away from the salt bath surface, the total corrosion depth were decreased due to the drop of temperature.
