The energy consumption of each mobile terminal must be evenly distributed in order to maximize the lifetime of mobile terminals. In this thesis, an energy-balance routing strategy is proposed to extend the lifetime of each mobile terminal so that mobile terminals consume energy evenly to avoid energy shortage in frequently used terminals. For the route selection, it is necessary to estimate the remaining energy of each terminal and requires the information of hop count along the path, and the number of terminals with out-of-energy in the network. A route discovery process derived from the on-demand routing concept is proposed where the address information of terminals with out-of-energy need to be maintained periodically based on the energy-balance routing strategy. Applications of wireless ad hoc networks based on the practicability must also concern the failure rate of connection requests. The lifetime of each terminal and the failure rate of connection requests are evaluated using simulation and the results are compared with routing strategies such as the shortest path, minimum battery cost, min-max battery cost, and conditional min-max battery cost.
