Preparation of carbon nanotubes from polycarbosilane has been successfully performed in our laboratory, but the growth mechanisms has not been realized. Hence we designed several experiments to understand the growth mechanisms of carbon nanotubes. As a result, the growth mechanisms of carbon nanotubes by polycarbosilane is dominated by gas-solid reaction. On the other hand, carbon nanotubes were synthesized from polypropylene ( PP ) and polystyrene ( PS ). The method has been developed to produce carbon nanotubes by the catalytic decomposition of the polymers at a temperature about 700℃. While iron chloride ( FeCl3 ) was used as the catalysts, the diameters of carbon nanotubes become as small as 15nm.
