Diisocyanate was grafted on the polymer membrane surfaces by the chemical reaction with the hydroxyl groups. Afterwards, diamines were grafted on these membranes. Also, we analyzed the surface properties of these membranes by means of micro-ATR、ESCA and surface contact angles. To investigate the biocompatibility of these membranes, mouse cerebellum cortical granule cells and cell line PC12 cells were cultured on these modified membranes, and their growth and death were quantified by the MTT and LDH assays. The viability of PC12 cells cultured on modified EVAL membrane surfaces were improved relative to non-modified EVAL membranes. But, the same result cannot be seen when we cultured granule cells on these membranes. It indicated that the same material has different effects on different species of cells. The viability of granule cells or PC12 cells cultured on modified PVA membrane surfaces were higher than intact PVA membranes. But, owing to the relative low viabilities, the modified PVA membranes cannot be the ideal biomaterials. Moreover, not only the surface but also the bulky properties of substrates would influence the growth of cultured cells In vitro. Finally, the electrophoretic mobility of PC12 cells was measured by microelectrophoresis technique to explore the interactions between the cells and culture substrates, and the results indicated that the surface hydrophilicity of culture substrates would influence cell surface charge.
