Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 資訊管理研究所 === 90 === In most of the cases , SCSI interface and Fibre Channel interface HDD are defined as high end drives and are used in servers or network storage environment. On the other hand, ATA interface HDD is usually defined as the low end、low price and low efficiency interface。 This thesis reviews the specification of ATA interface HDD, and studies the possibility of using ATA interface HDD in the server or network storage environment. In future network storage architecture, HDD will no more be defined as only the peripherals of the host machine, but as a stand alone centric working unit of the information technology. This thesis will compare the differences between the ATA interface and the SCSI interface HDD from the functionality, reliability as well as the performance price ratio point of view.
This thesis will also compare three most popular IP-base storage protocols - FCIP , iFCP and iSCSI - from three directions : technology , marketing trend, and the future development trend. Due to the fact that ATA interface is the most popular and cost effective interface in current storage interface, we also propose a protocol, called iATA, that is an IP-base storage protocol using ATA interface. We then study the possibility of the iATA protocol from the technology point of view, and compare it with other IP base storage protocols. The comparison will focus on the market acceptance. Then we propose possible market competition strategy.
Our result can be summaried as follows : First , we show that, from the functionality, reliability , and performance-price ratio points of view, ATA interface HDD can also be used in the server and network storage environment. Secondary, the low-cost IP-base storage iATA can be widely accepted in the market as long as some of the problems pointed out in the thesis can be solved. We demonstrate that the ATA interface HDD can also be used in the server and network storage environment to show that ATA interface HDD with the combination storage architecture can replace the original high end SCSI or Fibre Channel HDD in those applications.
The low cost IP base storage iATA storage architecture which use the most popular and the cost effective ATA interface HDD will be widely accepted in the marketing as long as some of the problems which was pointed out in this study can be solved .
We expect the IP base network storage over ATA interface will change the traditional information technology concept . For example SCSI interface HDD can be replaced by ATA interface HDD be used in network storage envionment , the server will no more be the centric of the information technology but instead the network storage will be the centric of the information technology.
The cost leadership is always the wining strategy in the information technology market. With this low cost iATA IP base network storage, we expect a low cost remote backup solutions will soon be affected in the market.
