Fractal theory is a new method to explain irregularity of nature. The concept of fractal dimension is employed to explore spatial patterns of settlement. Use the fractal dimension variation to compare spatial pattern, it is better than other methods. In this study, integrate GIS and settlement analysis to confer the fractal dimension concept with spatiotemporal aspect.
In Taiwan, analyzing the fractal dimension in each county discovered the variation in spatial pattern. Research of temporal-analysis in settlement development show that settlement change always become stable in long term.
In this case study, Fractal dimension could explain the complex system of settlement structure and reconstruct the spatial pattern of settlement and help to find the drive force of land use change.
