Because of inadequate statistical control, many researches couldn’t clarify the causal relationship of them. Even if some could, they often didn’t put the intervening variables, such as social network. Thus they couldn’t still explain the causal mechanism. In addition, so far as samples were concerned, most of researches only focused on the specific or regional samples. Thus the results of those couldn’t reach a consensus. Up to the present, we couldn’t find any researches that compared high and elementary school teachers with other occupations. This study used path analysis to analyze data from 1997 Social Change Survey in Taiwan. The main findings were as follows: As far as depression was concerned, high and elementary school teachers reported the highest levels of depression among occupations. The reasons were larger female and single ratios of high and elementary school teachers. However, they also had the most social contacts among occupations that moderated their depression. As far as sense of achievement was concerned, high and elementary school teachers also reported the highest levels of sense of achievement among occupations, even higher than upper white collars. High and elementary school teachers attended school activities most often, and had the most social contacts, the largest network heterogeneity, better neighborhood, and the most emotional support. Besides, high and elementary school teachers were with a smallest divorce ratio, the highest high and elementary school education, and more income. The above were used to illustrate high and elementary school teachers’ high levels of sense of achievement. As far as interpersonal alienation was concerned, excepting agricultural, animal, husbandry and forestry workers, and fishermen, high and elementary school teachers reported the lowest levels of alienation, but the differences all weren’t significant. After controlling the demographic strata and intervening variables, the alienation of high and elementary school teachers was lower than sales and service workers, agricultural, animal, husbandry and forestry workers, and fishermen significantly. Besides, high and elementary school teachers were with the smallest divorce ratio. These two decreased alienation. In the other hand, high and elementary school teachers were with a larger single ratio and the highest high and elementary school education. These two raised alienation. On account of above, compared with other occupations, the positive and negative effects of high and elementary school teachers on alienation canceled out. Furthermore the sample of high and elementary school teachers was not large enough. Therefore the differences between high and elementary school teachers and other occupations were not significant.
