However, the current emphasis of energy study and urban development has been centered on the use of fossil fuels. Energy theories have seldom been used to study the evolution of urban systems. Therefore, the primary purpose of this research is to analyze the succession mechanisms of urban ecosystem in metropolitan region, and propose the way of regulation of succession mechanism for urban sustainable development. This research starts with referring to the succession mechanisms of natural ecosystem, identifying the significance and concept of urban ecosystem, and proposing the hypotheses of succession mechanism for urban ecosystem based on the theories of ecological energetic. In order to verify the hypotheses and discuss the causes of issues from metropolitan development, this research is then to apply the methodology of system ecology for developing the system model of urban ecosystem. The scope of the hypotheses will emphasize on literature review of ecosystem theories and urban energetic, from which the hypotheses of urban energetic will be proposed and tested using real date of Taiwan cities. At last, on the basic of urban hypotheses; the research scope will focus on the development of urban energetic system model to study the mechanism of urban energetic on urban development. The energy language developed by H. T. Odum and the Stella simulation software will be used to achieve this aim. The results indicate the succession mechanisms of urban ecosystem, include system metabolism and overall homeostasis, and differed with natural ecosystem. As the future development of urban ecosystem reinforces both ecological conservation and economic development, and the self-organization mechanism of overall homeostasis will be matched to the succession of natural ecosystem simultaneously.
