Software download and replacement are important research topics in software radio. In addition to pure application download, the download and replacement of core software, such as Protocol stack, are also addressed in software radio. But the application of software download in business market is limited to pure application download, for example, NTT DoCoMo i-mode in Japan. In this thesis, we discuss the Man Machine Interface (MMI) download and replacement in mobile phone and Short Message Service (SMS) located in GSM protocol layer 3. By following the definition of reconfigurable device in software radio, we use MIDP provoded by Sun microsystems to build a MMI download and replacement testbed and implement Ehanced Messaging Service (EMS) defined in GSM to demostrate MMI download.
