A reliable and validated assessment instrument, composed of three separate dimensions, was administered, collected and sorted out by mailed questionnaires to six hundred and two secondary science teachers randomly sampled out of one hundred and fifteen secondary schools in central Taiwan. When data collected from the survey was subject to statistical analysis, the main findings from the results demonstrate that: (a) On the whole, secondary science teachers in Taiwan have fair cognitive understanding of environmental knowledge. The performances of different kinds of secondary science teachers were ranked as the following order: Senior highschool teachers > Junior highschool teachers > Vocational highschool teachers. (b) As regards the environmental attitude, secondary science teachers have been strongly positive. The results showed that junior highschool teachers have most positive environmental attitude, however, the senior highschool teachers have least positive attitude. (c) The secondary science teachers, who had participated in workshops, environmental protection movement groups or environmental education courses, had better performance in either cognitive or attitude domains. (d) Female secondary science teachers demonstrated better cognitive performance in environmental education knowledge, and they also tended to have more positive attitudes towards the environment. (e) More than half of the subject teachers was able to comprehend key concepts of the sustainable education, and applied those ideas in educating their students. (f) The inter-correlational analysis showed that environmental behavior intention is not significantly correlated with environmental knowledge, but is significantly correlated with environmental attitude. Environmental attitude is not significantly correlated with environmental knowledge either. It is suggested more environmental behavior studies be carried out further in order to establish a sound theoretical model of “Taiwanese responsible environmental behavior”. 蘇育任 2002 學位論文 ; thesis 209 zh-TW
