This study aims to analyze the theories and related researches of principals’ leadership behavior and managerial model in the elementary schools, to understand the awareness, expectation, differences and relationship of the school educators in the elementary schools in Taichung County, in regard to the current situation of principals’ leadership behavior and managerial model, to have a forecast analysis for various variables related to principals’ leadership behavior and managerial model and to give concrete suggestions for improving the principals’ leadership behavior and effective school management after synthesizing the results and findings in the study.
The study mainly used a questionnaire survey. People surveyed were the school educators in the elementary schools in Taichung County. The questionnaire is entitled “Questionaire to Survey Elementary School Principals’ Leadership Behaviors and Managerial Model of Taichung County”. The subjects in the study consisted of 748 people in the title of chairman, head of a department, home-room teachers and course teachers in 80 elementary schools in Taichung County. The study reclaimed 642 questionnaires and 620 of them are effective. The usable percentage was 82.89%. The data obtained from questionnaires were coded, recorded and executed with the statistic software, SPSS FOR WINDOWS 10.0. The statistic methods include proportions, average, standard deviation, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffe’s comparison, Pearson’s integrating difference, step-by-step multi-return analysis…etc.
The results of the study were as follows:
1.The awareness and expectation of the school educators in the elementary schools , in regard to the current development of principals’ leadership behavior, emphasize on “Setting a good example” most. It shows the school educators pay more attention to “Setting a good example” for the principals’ leadership behavior.
2. The awareness of the school educators in the elementary schools, in regard to the principals’ managerial model, shows “Bureaucratic Model” has the highest percentage. However, the school educators expect “Colleague Model” most.
3.Because of different variables of school educators, the school educators in the elementary schools show different awareness and expectation in regard to the current development of principals’ leadership behavior. Old and senior school educators have more awareness and expectation for the current development of principals’ leadership behavior.
4. Because of different location of schools, the school educators in the elementary schools have different awareness and expectation in regard to the current development of principals’ leadership behavior. The school educators in faraway mountain areas and in cities have more awareness and expectation for the current development of principals’ leadership behavior than that in the villages.
5.Because of different variables of school educators, the school educators in the elementary schools in Taichung County have different awareness and expectation in regard to the principals’ managerial model. The school educators have different awareness and expectation for the managerial model of the principals at the age of 51 to 60 as well as for that of the principals who have worked for 9 to 12 years.
6.Because of different situation and location of schools, the school educators in the elementary schools have different awareness and expectation in regard to the current development of principals’ managerial model. The school educators in medium-sized schools in the village have more different awareness, but don’t have different expectation for the current development of principals’ managerial model.
7.The awareness of the school educators in the elementary schools shows positive results for the principals’ leadership behavior and managerial model while the expectation shows negative results for the both.
8.The variables of school educators and situation have a partial forecasting function for the current development of principals’ leadership behavior and managerial model. The age, sex and marriage of principals have forecasting function for the principals’ leadership behavior. The age and sex of principals have the forecasting function for the expectation in regard to the principals’ leadership behavior. The principals’ working period and sex and school history have the forecasting function for the current development of principals’ managerial model. The age and working-period of principals have the forecasting function for the expectation in regard to the principals’ managerial model.
The study, based on the above-mentioned research conclusion, provides suggestions for educational units, elementary school principals and future researcher .
