Summary: | 碩士 === 臺中師範學院 === 國民教育研究所 === 90 === The purposes of this study were to investigate (a) relationships between parents’ background and the current level of parent involvement in primary school education, and (b) differences between the current level and the expectation level of parent involvement . The background variables contain sex, educational level, occupation, the number of children, and the style of discipline.
Questionnaire survey was the main research method of this study. Scale of Disciplinary Style and Scale of Parent Involvement were the instruments. The participants were 844 parents whose children were in primary school in Changhua. A t-test for independent sample and one-way ANOVAs were employed to analyze the relationship between parents’ background and their current level of involvement, and t-test for dependent sample were employed to analyze the differences between the current level and the expectation level of parent involvement.
Main results of this study were as follows:
(a) Parents’ sex, educational level, occupation, and the number of children were not related to their involvement.
(b) Parents’ disciplinary style was related to their involvement. Authoritative parents’ involvement was higher than authoritarian and neglectful parents’ involvement. Yet there was no difference between authoritative parents’ involvement and indulgent parents’ involvement.
(c) There were differences between the current level and the expectation level of parent involvement. Parents expected that they would involve their children’s home activities and support school activities more than their current involvement.
Based on the results of this study, some suggestions are made to teachers, schools, parents, and future researchers. Theses suggestions include that teachers should provide more opportunities for parents to participate; schools should plan more activities of parent involvement; parents should hold more active attitude toward the involvement of school activities; further researchers can use qualitative approach to study the topic of parent’ involvement.
