Summary: | 碩士 === 臺中師範學院 === 自然科學教育學系 === 90 === The purpose of this study was to investigate primary school pupils’ reading comprehension on scientific text. The researcher selected reading materials with different types and different disposals of words and graphics. Twenty 6th grade students participated in task performance interviews and questioning-and-answering test for reading comprehension. Additionally, the researcher investigated pupils’ perspectives and viewpoints on the scientific text.
The results of this study indicated that: (1) the performance of the reading comprehension test of pupils who read complete expository text was slightly higher than that of those who read text presenting words and graphics together; (2) pupils who were fond of reading narrative text were more than those who like to read expository text; (3) most pupils (75%) considered that they have to spend more time because expository text is more difficult to understand; (4) many students (80%) claimed that graphics were more helpful when they read expository scientific text than as they read narrative text; (5) among the graphics attached to expository scientific text, easy and explainable ones were more attractive; (6) pupils tended to view that graphic with the function of representation and explanation in narrative text were more attractive.
Suggestions for the compilation and selection of pupils’ reading materials were also provided in this study.
