The study employed three kinds of survey methods to collect data:analysis of document ,questionnaire and interview .The subjects included 293 teachers randomly sampled from 38 elementary schools in Pingtung country .The metric data were analyzed by chi-square ,t-test ,one-way ANOVA .The non-metric data were analyzed by content-analysis method. The main conclusions were drawn as follows: 1. In teachers’ national identity, teachers’ national identity mode tends toward liberal nationalism, teachers’ image of state tends toward Taiwanese identity and the relations between Taiwan and mainland tend to keep the present condition. 2.There are significant differences in the elementary school teachers’ national identity in term of the age, academics degree, ethnic and party identity. 3.There are significant differences in the elementary school teachers’ teaching-attitude in term of ethnic and party identity. 4.There is not significant positive relationship between teachers’ national identity and teachers’ teaching-attitude. 5.On the viewpoint of nationalism to explain national identity, national orientation was indefinite and disconnect with national society led to the contradiction and embarrassment of national identity education for teachers in elementary school. Suggestions related to consolidation policies ,teacher-training institution,teachers of elementary school and further research are also provided. keywords:national identity , teaching —attitude ,liberalism ,nationalism ,liberal nationalism ,image of state.
