Abstract
The main purposes of this study were (1) to explore the opinions of elementary school teachers and parents toward parent involvement on attitudes, abilities and wills, contents, and the elements of its influence; (2) to explore the situation of parent involvement after the educational revolution of open education, spirits of small class teaching, and tries of nine-year classes; (3) to provide suggestions to improve parent involvement.
This study used Questionnaire Survey as main research method and Questionnaire of Parent Involvement in Children’s Study as instrument. The subjects included 1161 teachers and parents random stratified samples from public elementary schools in Kaohsiung City. The valid samples were 1035, 89.1 percent. Data were analyzed through statistics methods of frequency distribution, percentage, chi-square test, and one-way MANOVA.
The main conclusions were as follows:
一. The elementary school teachers and parents in Kaohsiung City all agree and support toward parent involvement.
二. The opinions of elementary school teachers and parents in Kaohsiung City toward parent involvement were similar.
三. The opinions of elementary school teachers and parents in Kaohsiung City toward the influences of parent involvement were different.
四. In Kaohsiung City, those who recognize the abilities of parent involvement most were elementary schoolmasters, administrators in schools, and teachers with degrees of teachers’acadcmy.
五. Teachers in big and downtown schools in Kaohsiung City recognize the abilities of parent involvement most.
六. In Kaohsiung City, elementary schoolmasters who have degrees of teachers’acadcmy and are administrators in schools recognize the wills of parent involvement most.
七. Teachers in big and downtown schools in Kaohsiung City recognize the wills of parent involvement most.
八. In Kaohsiung City, parents who have high degrees, work in administrations, and participate in Parent-Teacher Association have the best abilities for parent involvement.
九. Parents in middle and downtown schools in Kaohsiung City have the best abilities for parent involvement.
十. In Kaohsiung City, parents who have high scholarships, work in business, and participate in Parent-Teacher Association have the best wills for parent involvement.
十一. Parents in middle and downtown schools in Kaohsiung City have good wills for parent involvement.
十二. The relations between the abilities and wills for parent involvement are: the more abilities, the more wills.
十三. The abilities and wills of positive parents are better than those of negative parents.
十四. The Abilities and the wills for parent involvement are significantly different. Summarily, the wills are higher than the abilities.
Based on the above conclusions, this study provided some suggestions as follows:
一. For education administrative authorities
1. Emphasize the distribution of educational resources and assist low-cultural schools to improve the abilities for parent involvement.
2. When advocating educational revolution, consider both Cost-benefit and efficiency.
二. For schools
1. Offer more educational activities to improve communications between teachers and parents.
2. Encourage teachers’ participating in administrative work to improve their abilities.
3. Build study groups and offer related subjects to improve the abilities of parent involvement.
4. Enact a good turn system to face problems positively.
5. Teachers should change the narrow minds to increase cooperations between teachers and parents.
三. For parents
1. Enact correct and active attitudes to improve education progress.
2. Be active in parent involvement to get opportunities for self-realization.
四. For future research
1. Enlarge the research members and the levels of schools.
2. Incorporate more research methods to realize the real problems.
3. Choose research variables carefully to connect research conclusions and real situations.
4. According to rcal requests of schools, realize the variables of parent involvement.
