Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the leisure life of middle-aged female family caregivers who take care of their disability parents or parents-in-law at home. The aim was to understand their mental transition process and their leisure participation, leisure experiences, leisure constraints, leisure attitude, and leisure need within the role of family caregivers.
Semi-structured in-depth interviews were the major method and personal interviews conducted with a purposive sample of six middle-aged female caregivers living in Kaohsiung or Pingtung. The data collected from the interviews were analyzed by a constant comparison process and two major themes emerged: (a) to turn bitter to joyfulness , (b) to find the way for leisure in busy caregiving life.
The result of the research shows that these family caregivers had no choices but to bear the responsibilities of care. They felt bitter in the first stage of care career because they could neither find any free time for leisure in their daily life nor identify their role of caregivers. As time by they gradually could find their own way for leisure. The features of their leisure are momentary in terms of time and accessible and convenient in terms of geography. Leisure is their dynamic power to turn bitter to joyfulness.
