Based on constructivistic teaching approach , this research attempted to integrate competencies of computer usage to teach campus plants, and to discuss how the researcher made adjustment to both his instructional design and belief on Constructivism when difficulties were encountered. The researcher also recorded students’ learning process and performance along with the application of PDAs on learning.
Action research was adopted in this research as well. The researcher first collected all the information about the plants on campus. Then a teaching website relating to the campus plants was set up to provide two classes of fifth-grade students for scaffolding. Those subjects took science and computer classes by turns. As to the information gathered and analyzed in this research, it was obtained through teacher’s diary for instruction, videotapes of teaching activities, interview, learning diaries, questionnaires, observation in class, and so on.
The followings are the conclusions drawn from the research:
1. Integrating computer usage into science curriculum make the teaching of campus plants more constructivitic-oriented.
2. Constructivistic teaching approach should be student-centered. Therefore, teachers must prepare well in advance and be aware of students’ prior knowledge. They also have to see if students focus on learning and discussing the main ideas all the time. Besides, the worksheets used in learning of campus plants should not be too hard and be carried on in a creative way. In this way, students are able to internalize the knowledge they obtained through the Internet.
3. Action Research accelerates the researcher’s professional development.
4. The course design of campus plants in this study promotes students’ abilities at recognizing plants, using computers, gathering and organizing information, and learning peer cooperation.
5. PDAs are easy to access and carry for fields trip. However, students’ mood may turn vile due to bad reception, dim pictures or small screens.
