The study was aimed at exploring and analyzing the adaptation of teachers’ qualifications in transforming industrial vocational schools into community colleges. Process of literature review, questionnaire and interview were used in the research.
The population of the study was industrial vocational school teachers in Taiwan. The sample consisted of 550 subjects and the total number of usable sets of instrument returned was 474 and a usable return rate of 86.2%. The questionnaire was revised by scholars and tested by factor analysis. The Cronbach α was 0.97. Therefore, the validity and reliability of the questionnaire was acceptable.
The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, including frequency distribution, percentage and chi-square. According to the results of the statistic analysis, the following conclusions were incurred.
1. The educational aim and function of community colleges were as follows: First, develop students’ abilities to be adapted to the social changes and to fulfill themselves. Second, aim at the needs of policy、 market and students and combine the resources of schools and communities to positively promote advanced education and to achieve lifelong learning.
2. The educational aim and function of the two-year courses of community colleges were to satisfy the students’ need to continue to study and to emphasize personality traits and cultural cultivation.
3. The educational aim and function of the short-period courses of community colleges were to emphasize professional abilities and skill operations, to strengthen vocational instructions and vocational moral concepts, and to provide employment information and recurrent education.
4. If industrial vocational teachers’ qualifications were not suitable for the two-year courses of community colleges, the adaptation way was to encourage them to study further in the graduate school to get the official degree.
5. If industrial vocational teachers’ qualifications were not suitable for the short-period courses of community colleges, the adaptation way was to encourage them to take part in the skill examination or professional skill exam and to receive the second professional training.
6. If the number of industrial vocational teachers who were qualified for the two-year courses or the short-period courses in community colleges was not enough, the adaptation way was to let them study further to get the degree, to take part in the skill examination or professional skill exam, or to employ qualified teachers in cooperation schools or units to teach.
7. The teaching strategies for transforming industrial vocational schools into community colleges were to match the local industrial traits to give the related courses for the citizens in communities to study further and to promote the cooperation between factories and schools to elevate the teaching quality for the citizens in communities to select studying.
