ABSTRACT
Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and polarized optical microscopy (POM) have been used to analyze the phase separation behavior and mechanism of the PCL modified epoxy resins. Five similar amine chemical structures (EDA, DETA, TETA, TEPA, PEHA) are used as curing agents. The side reaction between PCL and epoxy/amine blend system is analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). The extend of reaction at the initial phase separation is determined by the kinetic parameters based on DSC isothermal kinetical method.
A series of different phase separation mechanisms are observed by optical microscopy (OM), such as NG of PCL, SD of PCL, SD of epoxy and even NG of epoxy. The polarized optical microscopy (POM) is used to determine component phases. A more detailed structure, such as secondary phase separation, is analyzed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Kinetic result from DSC reveal that the driving force of phase separation is come from the increase of the epoxy molecular weight and the crosslinking structure. The PCL/DETA/Epoxy blend is an UCST system.
