Summary: | 碩士 === 國立暨南國際大學 === 經濟學系 === 90 === Purpose of this study is to focus primarily on the investigation of the relationship between family background and children’s educational attainment. In considering inter-generational transfer mechanism of human capital, we especially emphasize on siblings effect. We hope to understand how the sibling’s composition and birth order affect the children’s educational attainment. Furthermore, we would like to check whether there is gender preference between parents. Moreover, stratify sub-samples by birth cohorts, we can further understand changes of sibling’s effect over the process of economics development.
We utilize the original data of “Panel Study of Family Dynamics” (PSFD) in this study to examine the decision-making mechanism of the household’s human capital investment on the children’s education.
Findings of the empirical analyses are that the educational attainment of the parents plays significant roles in determining the amount of the human capital investment towards the children’s education. Nevertheless, the magnitude of the influence is decreasing as the parents education increasing. Men’s educational attainment is affected more by their fathers than mothers, the reverse is true for women’s. Moreover, the existence of old sisters consistently shows positive siblings effect, while that of younger brothers and younger sisters are negative. Finally, we find positive birth order effects for children’s educational attainment for both male and female.
