The power control of recording laser in optical disks is the key in maintaining fine writing quality. In the thesis, a simple write channel model for optical disks is obtained through analytical and experimental work. Accordingly, this model is used for designing running optimal power controller. Traditional running optimal power controller is a proportional-type controller - adjusting the laser power in proportional to the sampled reflected signal. The thesis applies least mean square, recursive least square, and model reference adaptive control methods to design the optimal controller. The analysis and design are expected to enhance the writing quality of optical disk drivers.
