This kind of farm produced more pigs than other types of pig farms. The farrow-to-finish farm has been listed as the main pig farm that can receive more extension service for long-run operation by the government. Therefore, The purpose of this study was made to develop an easy handled computer management information system for the operation efficiency of the farrow-to-finish pig farms. By inputting records of pig farms and using the high-speed function of a personal computer, the database of management was calculated and analyzed to act as a valuable reference for decision-making. This system was designed with the programming language of Visual Basic 5 and Microsoft Access. The main menu of the system was divided into four categories including basic data, data maintenance, printing sheet, and statistical analysis. The system recorded information of swine production, management, and marketing. The items of system analysis covered replacement rate, culling rate, survivability, farrowing rate, average parity per sow per year, litter size at birth, live litter size at birth, litter size at weaning, survivability at weaning, market pigs per sow per year, turnover rate of farms, average feed efficiency, operation efficiency per labor, and variable cost, fixed cost, and production cost per kilogram of hogs. The operation profitability of pig farms was evaluated as follows: profit per year of the farm, profit per sow per year, profit per hundred-kilogram hog per year, profit rate and turnover rate of capital, the break-even-point on farm return and pig raising, and the marginal safety rate. Analyzing a farrow-to-finish pig farm’s improvement on management efficiency during a 4-year period using the system, the results showed that pig farms improved 6.27% for farrowing rate, 0.1 litter per year, and 1.03 head market hogs per sow per year, increased 0.38 head and 4.38% weanling pigs per litter, decreased NT$ 2.48 feed price per kilogram, decreased NT$ 675 feed cost and, NT$ 750 production cost, and improved NT$ 305 profit per 100 kilogram of hogs. The farrow-to-finish pig farms can use the system to input farm records and, calculate the operation efficiency and production cost promptly. The diagnosis of operation profitability for pig farms was also provided. Farm managers could therefore understand their operation efficiency and economic profit for the preceding year. From these references for decision-making, farm managers could thus improve their future business.
