Investigation of Betel Quid Chewing, Cigarette Smoking and Alcohol Drinking Prevalence Rates and Health Conscience of Tainan County Residents

碩士 === 高雄醫學大學 === 口腔衛生科學研究所碩士在職專班 === 90 === Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence rates of betel quid chewing, cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking in Tainan County. It also investigated the risk factors of the unhealthy habits in the different geographies-mountain, coastland and urban areas. The study design was a stratified multi-stage cluster sampling with selection probability proportional to size. For residents with age 18 years old or older, there were 419 participants in this survey. The data management was implemented by SAS software, and statistical analysis was conducted by JMP software. The results showed that the prevalence rates of chewing betel quid (14.8%), smoking cigarette (28.4%) and drink alcohol (11%) are similar to Taiwan. Men in 35-49 years old had the highest prevalence rates of smoking cigarette (62.3%). For men with 18-34 years old, they had the highest prevalence rates of betel quid chewing (18.2%) and alcohol drinking (13.7%). In the different geographies of Tainan, the highest prevalence rates of both chewing betel (22.7%) and smoking cigarette (31%) are in the mountain area and the highest prevalence rate of drinking alcohol (20.3%) is in the coastland area. The average cognition of areca/betel quid chewing was 45.96, and average attitude was 3.03. The general concept of population toward areca/betel quid chewing will require more emphasis.
