It was also certified with oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC), with the over-expression can be detected in the serum, effusions, and saliva of many cancer patients. The present study was undertaken to quantitate the serum levels of c-erbB2 (Her-2/neu) in patients suffering from oral pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions. 84 cases of OSCC were randomly selected using ELISA (Kits QIA10 c-erbB2/c-neu, Rapid Format ELISA, Oncogene Research Products, Boston, MA, USA) technique for detection of sera oncogene over-expression, other premalignant oral lesions, breast cancers, and normal samples are also studied. The correlation between the clinical expression and the oncogene c-erbB2 (Her-2/neu) over-expression are also compared for extensive clinical usage. The results of c-erbB2 (Her-2/neu) protein indicated that 70.24 % of OSCC, and 60 % oral submucous fibrosis and leukoplakia patients had significant higher mean concentration than normal controls. The percentage of serum over-expression was also corresponded with study of the breast tumors (71.43 % over-expression) and tumor lymph node or distant metastasis status but also with the tumor sizes. As the result, c-erbB2 (Her-2/neu) protein expression may be involved in the development and progression of OSCC, and the determination of serum c-erbB2 (Her-2/neu) protein concentration may be the indicator for the oral pre-cancerous lesions and the spread of the OSCC with the over-expressed c-erbB2 (Her-2/neu) proteins (Supported by NSC Grant, Taiwan, 89-2314-B-037-122).
