The objective of the study is to develop the top coating resin for ink-jet overhead transparency. Several kind of acrylate monomers(eg.,acrylic acid, hydroxy ethyl methacrylate,….etc.) and other monomers were selected more adopted as reactants in the solution polymerization to obtain the base coating resin .Then, certain amounts of solvent, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and cross-linking agent(3245) were added into the coating resin solution to adjust the solid content and viscosity of the mixture. The resulting coating solutions were then coated on the overhead transparency by a special designed roller coater. After drying under 120oC for 30 sec in the oven, the final coated overhead transparency was taken out for ink-jet printing test.
The printing test was conducted on EPSON STYLUS 750 with a standard graph. The printing quality was evaluated from the overall performance of color density, anchorage, shrinkage, well mixed and by three judges. The printing quality of Mitsubishis‘s commercial ink-jet overhead transparency was scored 100 and used as a reference for the evaluation. Taguchi Method was adopted to conduct the experiments. Orthogonal array, L18, was used for all experimental designs. After transforming the data in Signal-to-Noise ratio (S/N)L by using the Larger-the-Better equation, response table and response graph and thus the optimum formulation were obtained from the data analysis. Confirmation runs were also conducted to test the final products.
It is found that, based on a batch amount of 1570g under the conditions of agitation 250rpm, temperature 85℃, and reactor time 8 hrs,the optimum formulation will be solid content 40wt%, monomer(MA201) 96g, monomer (MA200) 72g,monomer(MA202) 180g, monomer(MA204) 100g, monomer (MA203) 180g, solvent 942g(IPA/EAC =40/60wt%, i.e. IPA/EAC =376.8g/565.2g), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) 20g and cross-linking agent (3245) 3g.The final coating thickness is able to be controlled in the range of 20± 3μm, if the curing condition is at 120℃for 30 seconds. After printing test, the average score is about 88 for the final prepared product. The quality is very close to that of Mitsubishi’s commercial ink-jet overhead transparency
