It’s geotechnical characteristics and engineering behavior are significantly different from those of alluvial and sedimentary deposits or rocks . Due to the complexity in its composition , significant scatter exist in the measured shearing strength using conventional test method . In the recent years , several infrastructures will encounter with excavation in gravel formation . Therefore , a better understanding in the engineering behavior , and an improved method in obtaining the shear properties of gravel formation are essential for the engineering practice . Currently , the direct shear test is the most common method in obtaining the shear strength parameters of gravels . However , this apparatus is subjected to major defect in forcing the failure plane to occur between the upper and lower halves of the shear box . On the other hand , the simple shear machine has been proved to be very useful in measuring the shear strength of soils . Therefore , a large scale apparatus which can perform direct shear and simple shear test was developed to investigate the effects of arrangement and testing method on the shearing properties of granular material . Results of this study indicate that the shearing strength of the granular material is strongly influenced by the location of failure plane in direct shear test .
