This study first reviewed literature of classroom design for various functions. Major points regarding the physical environments, facilities, equipment of classrooms for different functions and the requirement criteria were concluded and a classroom design checklist was developed accordingly. Aiming at six types of classrooms, interviews were then conducted to collect teachers’ opinions on their ideal classrooms and the ones that were in use for the intended instructional purposes. Observations of the six types of classrooms were also conducted with classroom design checklists. Layouts of each classroom together with the data collected were later compared and evaluated. Ideal designs for six types of university classrooms--multimedia lecture hall, multimedia discussion room, computer classroom, experiment laboratory (for Colleges of Science and Engineering), classroom for business courses (for Colleges of Business and Management), conversation classroom (for College of Foreign Languages)--were developed in this study. Factors such as capacity, functions, facility, equipment for each design were discussed and layouts of each classroom were also presented. Suggestions obtained from this study are: (1)classrooms should be planned and designed by professionals, (2)classrooms should be constructed and managed by specialized departments, (3)channels for information sharing on classroom designs need to be established.
