Using network becomes an essential skill. Accessing data via Internet is a trend, and so is in the home automation field. In this thesis, we propose a seven-layer home-automation-system development architecture that is simple, modulized, and expandable. And based on this architecture, we implement an economic, centralized home automation system. It is web-based, and is adapted to some open standards such as TCP, XML, HTTP, etc. The user-operating device is a PC or a cellular phone. The user interface is a web browser or a micro-browser. The core of the system is a database. The design of replacing the ordinary human- machine interface by accessing web database allows the user who is capable of designing homepages to participate in the design and to enjoy the fun of DIY. The ultimate goal of this thesis is to let people easily control the household electric devices or appliances wherever they are, so as to provide them with a more comfortable and convenient life.
