This thesis collects all of Yeo Shieh’s reading notes and comments, and analyze them from the different prospects such as Confucianism, Buddhism, Philosophy, Love and Passion, even Chinese theatric origin and Feminism, in order to explain its impacts on the historical society. This thesis is divided into 7 chapters. First chapter “General” states the purpose of this study and its methodology. Second chapter “Background of Reading Notes and Comments on the 《Red Chamber》”, outlines Mr. Yeo’s living environment, social background, mindset and family influences. Third chapter “The Confucianism of Mr. Yeo’s Reading Notes and Comments”, finds the time change on Confucianism and its input to Mr. Yeo’s reading notes. Fourth chapter “The Buddhism to Mr. Yeo’s Reading Notes and Comments” talks about the Buddhism in Ch’in Dynasty of China, then Mr. Yeo’s study in Buddhism, the quote of Buddhism in his reading notes. Fifth chapter “The love and passion of Pao-yu and Dy-yu”, observes Mr. Yeo’s comments on all the love affairs of Pao-yu and Dy-yu, as well as their influence to the descendants. Six chapter “Other observation of Mr. Yeo’s Reading Notes” touches about the origin of Chinese opera, which any other study in 《Red Chamber》has never mentioned.
