The purpose of this thesis is to master the use of études in the violin teaching. The author attempts to find the way— through the uses of études- to build overall techniques for the students, and furthermore, to provide appropriate études as a supporting material when any technical difficulty is encountered. The points of this study are as follows: (1) to identify the content of violin techniques, and find a structure which can present all of these techniques; (2) to determine the way to perform these techniques, and the way for training and practicing; and (3) to find the études which serve as an aid to overcome a new technique, and understand the purpose of this études, the range of difficulty, and the other subordinate objects.
According to the described points, this thesis consists of six chapters: Chapter One: “Introduction”, presents the motivation, purpose, scope, methodology, and significance of this thesis. Chapter Two: “Literature Review”, discuss the existing research and literature, the topics of historical developments, the progress of techniques, the application in teaching, and the art of practicing are all included. Chapter Three: “The Development of Violin Étude and Treatises of Techniques”, analyze and compare the technique theories as posed by famous violinists / theorists in the twentieth century. And proceed with the “Teaching Module in Violin Performance” offered Dr. Lan-ku Chen. Chapter Four and Five: “Teaching Module-Based Analysis of Études─Left Hand,” “Teaching Module-Based Analysis of Études─Right Hand,” described the points and ways of training of individual technique, found the corresponding études, and showed the results by their difficulties or easiness. Chapter Six: “ Conclusions and Suggestions,” briefly depicts main points of above-mentioned chapters, and suggests the topics for more advanced research in the future.
