Many epidemiological studies have reported that ozone, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter are responsible for increased respiratory symptoms and diseases in school children. Cellular oxidative damage has also been linked to ozone, nitrogen oxides or particulate matter exposure. As 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is a useful marker for oxidative stress, this study investigated the relationship between the level of 8-OHdG in school children and the levels of ambient ozone, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter in school children. Eighteen children were included in this study and morning urines were collected for nine days in Fall 2000 and seven days in Spring 2001. The children’s parents completed questionnaires including basic data and potential confounders related to oxidative stress. Urinary 8-OHdG level was determined using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Data on environmental ozone, nitrogen oxides and PM10 were obtained from Environmental Protection Administration air quality monitoring station which was located in the campus. Also, PM2.5 and PM1 concentrations were determined from trichotomous sampler which collected particles for 24 hour for 16 days. We used linear mix-effected model to determine the association between air pollutants and urinary 8-OHdG after adjusting the potential confounders. The study revealed that urinary 8-OHdG level was associated with the concentration of 8-hour nitrogen oxides, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide two days earlier (ps< 0.05), but not for the concentration of ozone and particular matter. However, no statistical significance between potential confounders and urinary 8-OHdG was found. We concluded that urinary 8-OHdG may be a sensitive marker related to nitrogen oxides. Besides, ambient nitric oxide may play an important role on oxidative damage. Tsun-Jen Cheng 鄭尊仁 2001 學位論文 ; thesis 88 zh-TW
