Firstly, the relationships between elements and sub-systems of CVT are discussed, and their functions and design processes are realized. Then, the failure mode of CVT is established based on theoretical analysis and practical considerations. Finally, CVT failure related current patents are searched, analyzed and evaluated. As the results, to the most critical items, possible design directions and improvements are proposed. This study established the CVT failure mode analysis table, analyzed current CVT related patents and proposed possible directions and design improvements. It is hoped the reliability and quality of CVT can, therefore be further improved with the help of this study.
