At the same times, a sustainable urban development has become the important function of local development. Urban sustainability indicator has become the major tool for evaluation. However, most of the indicator system of the sustainable urban development cannot evaluate the sustainability of land use planning in terms of whole spatial hierarchy of metropolitan. For this reason, this study uses Taipei Metropolitan Region as a case study, and follows the framework of “Living-Production-Ecology” of National Comprehensive Development Plan to develop an indicator system of sustainable land use planning. The framework of the indicator system developed includes six groups, and twelve indicators. GIS in incorporated for spatial analysis to check the sustainability of land use of Taipei Metropolitan region. As a result, five indicators “the incompatibility of land use of flood plain”, “the availability of mass transit system“, “the variation of landscape diversity”, “the incompatibility land use of conservation region for resource production”, “the incompatibility of land use of conservation region for water resource”, and “the incompatibility land use of conservation region for resource production” are moving toward sustainable development, but all the other indicators are moving away from sustainability. Finally, this research uses “Tanhai New Town” and “Mass Rapid Transit System” as cases of policy plans and applies the indicator system to measure their effects on the sustainability of land use in Taipei Metropolitan Region.
