The purpose of this research is to study how the Chi-ho(旗後) area growth was influenced by the economic trade development of Takow port(打狗港).
First, the geographical environment and historical background of Takow and Chi-ho will be stated. The main point of the statement is through the documentary data to analyze the function changes of Takow port in different periods when Taiwan was continuously ruled by the Dutch, Cheng cheng-kung, the ching Dynasty and the rulers’ attitudes to Takow port and Chi-ho. Their attitudes influenced the construction of this area. Before Taiwan was occupied by Japan, the military defense was the main construction of this area. After that period, the improvements in the gulf began to be put into Takow port.
Second, the economic aspects making Takow port prosperous will be studied. Before the harbor was open, fishing was the main economic activity in this area, and Chi-ho was the place where the fishermen built hunts for a short stay when they were fishing mullet. After the harbor was open, Takow became the port for the exportation of sugar and rice. People from many other countries came here to establish a lot of foreign business firms and they hired the inhabitants of this area as agent, to buy and sell sugar and rice for them. Therefore agent, the newly-risen social stratum flourished. At the very time, Chi-ho became a great commercial port where thousands of merchants gathered. During the period when Taiwan was occupied by Japan, in order to seize the rich natural resources from their colony and send the agricultural products to Japan to support the Japanese consuming, the Japanese started three-period harbor building projects. The building projects needed the labor, and therefore people from Pei-men(北門)、Tong-kang(東港) and Peng-hu(澎湖) swarmed onto this area .After the first period of harbor building projects was finished ,the amounts of ships and trades increased, and it made Takow the digest port in south Taiwan. Then Chi-ho became the capital village of the 18 ones in Takow.
The developments of Takow port during each period promoted the growth of Chi-ho in many aspects, for example, increasing population ,establishments of educational organizations, public constructions、traditional and new-style medical treatment, and etc. The prosperous trades of Takow port brought the area growth of Chi-ho.
