ABSTRACT
The purposes of this study were to analyze the contents of Taiwan’s television variety shows, and to investigate elementary school students’ viewing condition and opinions about the shows. This research also wanted to examine the effects of television variety shows literacy teaching on elementary school students.
This research analyzed Taiwan’s TV variety shows broadcasted between 8:00pm and 11:00pm each day during July 2000 to May 2001.
In survey research, we investigated elementary school students’ viewing condition and opinions about television variety shows by using the questionnaire developed by the author. The subjects for the survey were 356 sixth graders in Tainan city and Tainan county. The group interview was administered to 60 students selected from the 356 sixth graders in order to investigate their opinions about the shows.
As to the experiment research, the effects of the teaching were assessed by using “the static-group comparison design”. The subjects for the experiment were 75 sixth graders in two classes from an elementary school in Tainan county. The experimental group received 6 units of television variety shows literacy teaching. The time of experiment was lasted for 400 minutes within 5 weeks. After the experiment, the assessment developed by the author was administered to the experimental group and control group in order to examine the teaching effects.
The results of this study were as follows:
1.The contents of Taiwan’s television variety shows include 9 categories and the quality of the shows’ contents needs to be improved.
2.The levels of elementary school students’ exposure and preference of television variety shows were high. Their comments on the shows’ various contents were different. It was common that the students imitated certain contents of the shows.
3.The results of the group interview and questionnaire survey were largely identical. The group interview’s result reflected the students’ lack of television literacy.
4.After the television variety shows literacy teaching, the experimental group had a higher assessment score on television variety shows literacy test than the control group.
5.After the television variety shows literacy teaching, the students of the experimental group agree that they had developed and improved their critical skills regarding television variety shows.
