It was anticipated that students'' word ability would increase after accepting multimedia word instruction. Therefore, the design of a multidimensional word ability test and the experiment of multimedia word instruction were two focuses of this study. According to the above, the aims of this study were as follows. First, a multidimensional word ability test was designed. Second, the performance of the elementary school students for the multidimensional word ability test was discussed. Last, the performance of reading low-achievers who accepted multimedia word instruction in the elementary school was examined. To achieve these aims, the researcher inducted the characteristics of Chinese words such as linguistics, cognitive psychology and social culture from the literature. In addition, she constructed a model of multidimensional word ability based on morphology, semantics and word usage to form the basis of test designing and experimental teaching in the future. 240 elementary school students in both Tainan and Kaohsiung City and County participated in two pretests of this study. The target subjects of this study were 376 second graders in the northern, central, southern and eastern part of Taiwan. Two-step experimental teaching for both the experimental group and waiting-list control group was designed. The target subjects of the experimental teaching for this study were 36 reading low-achieving third graders in Yung-Hwa Elementary School in Tainan City, and nine boys and nine girls were included in both groups. A multidimensional word ability test and a multimedia word instruction web-server were the main instruments for this research. In addition, a graded Chinese characters reading test and a reading comprehension difficulty diagnosis test were also used. As for the data processing, ITEMAN, Amos, Ascal and SPSS were implemented. Besides, several statistics such as question analysis, parameter estimation, factor structure, one -way manova, product-moment correlation, and trend analysis were utilized for the data analysis. The results of this research were concluded as follows. First, word ability consisted of morphology, semantics and word usage. Second, elementary school students lacked the word ability of morphology. Third, students'' word ability had correlation with both recognizing characters and reading comprehension. Last, the multimedia word instruction web-server could increase students'' morphology ability and semantics ability. Based on the conclusion of this study, the researcher proposed concrete suggestions for the test design, curriculum design, word teaching and future research.
