Summary: | 碩士 === 國防管理學院 === 國防決策科學研究所 === 89 === Mainland China waged military provocation against Taiwan during the crisis in the Taiwan Strait in March 1996, and President Lee Teng-hui’s proposal of the relationship between the two sides of the strait to be a special state-to-state relationship in July 1999. This thesis is aimed to explore the real intention of mainland China.
Ever since its founding, mainland China has had different perspectives of national security at various stages of development, thus bringing about different implications of actively defensive military strategy. Over the past years, mainland China has externally launched several large-scale military actions. The reason that mainland China was flagrant in the use of force under the unfavorable internal and external surroundings has not been known and worth further study.
Different circumstances make countries develop customs, historical cultures and philosophies different from each other. In this context, this thesis tries to understand mainland China from the perspective of its strategic culture. The strategically cultural characteristics of mainland China are composed of the traditional strategic philosophy, humiliations in the recent Chinese history, Marxism-Leninism, Beijing leadership, war experiences, and Russian military influence. Such influence on the implications of the military strategy should be further analyzed. Besides, the motives behind the use of force can be analyzed and deducted from the viewpoint of strategic culture, which is helpful for us to come up with the principles and traces of Beijing’s military aggression.
For mainland China, the Taiwan issue involves with the basic interests of national security and sovereignty. However, from the viewpoint of strategic culture, we can further understand the Beijing’s perception of Taiwan as well as possible measures, and make preparations to cope with future changes.
