碩士 === 國立彰化師範大學 === 國文學系 === 89 === Title of thesis：Existence and Imagination－Research into the novels of Su Tong Su Tong began writing novels in the mid-80’s. Although a young author, he has enjoyed significant recognition for his work from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China, as well as other countries. His work has been translated into English, French, German, Italian and Dutch among others. Su Tong plays an important role in the development in Chinese literature. He plays with diverse styles, bravely experiments with modern language and tackles uncharted thematic areas. Along the way, he has created a unique narrative voice that is able to bridge traditional and popular literature. For this reason, Su Tong can be considered the most one of the most important representatives of modern Chinese literature. The topic of my thesis is Su Tong’s investigation into the state of human existence, the reflection of worldly experience and its transition into highly constructed, imaginative narrative. This paper can be divided into seven major sections and an appendix: 1. Research parameters, methods and motives; 2. Reflective contemporary thought and society of the period; 3. The influence and connection of Su Tong to Southern China; 4. Analysis of Su Tong’s various works and its types; 5. Classification of Su Tong’s themes and their expressions on the state of existence; 6. Exploration on Su Tong’s usage of modern Chinese language; 7. Conclusions and summary; 8. Appendix: bibliography (China, Taiwan and Hong Kong editions) and my 1999 interview with Su Tong.
