As PC has become a mature market, DTV is viewed as the most promising star of the next generation digital consumer electronic products. Its development not only influences Taiwan’s consumer electronic industry, but also the computer, information, broadcasting, and entertainment as well.
This study analyzes the DTV CA standards adopted of other countyies, compares the technical characteristics of CA system standards and explores the possibilities of adopting compatible CA systems for terisstrial broadcasting, cable systems and direct broadcast satellite systems. In the technical level, there is trade off between the CA system security and system interoperability.
Broadcasting systems with CA capability will be able to offer Pay TV servicers, interactive TV services, Pay information services as well as e-commerce services. Its impact on broadcasters is enormous. Taiwan DGT is in the process of defining Taiwan CA system standard. Broadcasters should plan ahead to take advantage of this powerful new capability.
