The GSM Association reports that 15 billion GSM Text messages sent globally during December 2000. More than 200 billion GSM text messages forecast for the whole year 2001. In this thesis, we design a protocol for GSM Short Message Service (SMS) and Internet applications. We first introduce the basic concept of GSM SMS, and the recent applications of GSM SMS. After analyzing the reqiurements of the Internet applications, we design an Internet protocol for using the GSM SMS from Internet applications. This protocol also supports the notification of incoming GSM SMS from outdoor cellular phone to the applications. This protocol (Short Message Interface/Internet Protocol, SMIP) is independent of the platform. SMIP depends on TCP/IP. GSM system operators and software developers can follow this SMIP specification to provide/write their own service/softwares. We also use Java™ language to implement an SMS Internet Application Service (server) that can support multiple Service Applications (client). We also provide sending short message example from WEB with PHP. Another example is more complex, it can send short messages, register phone numbers and receive messages to run an assigned windows program. Following this specification and protocol, service providers or software developers can easily provide scheduling notifications, system security alerts, remote controls, stock price notifications, etc. Tsai.
