Kao spent all his life making comments on topics from the ancient past to the present day. Furthermore, he distinguished himself by creating an epical and encyclopedic writing system which assumed the historical events that could be traced upward to the period of Chin Han and downward to the epoch of separatist warlord regimes, mainly at the Ching Dynasty. Among Kao Yang’s literary works, his historical novels are beyond all praise. Being knowledgeable about history and literature, Kao excelled in penetrating description of worldly wisdom. His condensed writing style shows considerable traditional Chinese color. The themes, the contents, and the writing skills expressed in his works are far better than those of his predecessors. Kao plays a significant part in the development of novels. Kao’s historical novels are exactly the subject that this thesis will work on The organization of this thesis is as follows: The introduction in Chapter 1 indicates the motivation of studying Kao’s works and the presentation of recent study on Kao himself and his novels in Taiwan and Mainland China. Then, a brief clarification of related discussion in this field will be provided in order to enable us to discriminate Kao’s works from others. In Chapter 2, there will be Kao’s biographical sketch and the course of creation. By knowing Kao’s background, it stands to reason that why Kao specialized in historical novels for thirty years. Kao had been the editorial writer of a newspaper for a long period of time. In addition to the argumentative writing on current issues, Kao also worked on textualism, anecdotes and historical novels which were all the creation of the past. The impact that these two different parts had made on his writing style was worth exploring. At the end of this chapter, an appendix of Kao’s chronology of writing course is enclosed. According to his technique of expression, his literary works are separated into different stages in order to analyze the variation he underment in the course of writing. In Chapter 3 and 4, the interpretation of the contents and the induction of the themes will be proceeded. Owing to the intricacy and the great number of his novels, the analysis will be focused on the contents and the analogical themes found in his works will be discussed. Thus, the deep concern and thought presenting in Kao’s works can be seen and understood clearly and systematically. Five different parts will be enumerated in this chapter, there are themes of love, court, chambers, officialdom and profit-seeking in business circl ,heroic legend ,and complicated legal cases ,and the biographic sketch of literati. Further discussion on Kao’s narrative pattern in Chapter 5 assumes a profound analysis of the five main structures-narrative time, space, plot, figure, and the writer’s viewpoint. Therefore, it helps to appreciate the writing skills that he inherits from predecessors and the innovation he made by himself. In Chapter 6, the conclusion will be drawn according to the aspect of literature and history. The achievement that Kao attained proved that Kao Yang, a cultural adherent, consigned the deepest affections toward Chinese culture by composing historical novels. Kao’s historical novels are of great literary value and he had made major contribution towards dissemination of Chinese culture. Yang Yuh-Cherng 楊玉成 2001 學位論文 ; thesis 153 zh-TW
