Recently, biotechnology is also one of the newly emergent industries in Taiwan. It requires significant financial support and human capitals in different fields. However, because of the lack of resources for many firms, strategic alliances are generally formed between firms. This study tries to find out the relationship between types of strategic alliance and firms’ age, employment, scientist, key scientists, capital, R&D ratio, operatic field, categories, and types of ownership. The study unit is the selected Taiwanese Biotechnology firms in 1999 and the American Biotechnology firms in1992, 1995, 1998. Data is collected through questionnaires as well as the firms’ financial reports through public sources. Analyses are done by STATA computer software. The empirical findings include: (1) The conglomerate firms tend to use more strategic alliances than firms with one or two actives in Taiwan. But small research-intensive firms tent to use more strategic alliances than firms with other activities in America. (2) The publicly traded firms tend to use more strategic alliances than privately held firms in Taiwan. But the privately held firms tend to use more strategic alliances than publicly traded firms in America. (3) Young firms tend to use more strategic alliances than old firms in both Taiwan and America. In addition, big firms in Taiwan tend to use more strategic alliances than small firms. However small firms tend to use more strategic alliances than big firms in America.
