According to reports from other countries, the prevalence of children’s low back pain is about 11.6% to 50.4%, higher than predicted. For prevention, it is important to assess the prevalence of low back pain of the children in Taiwan. ■Objectives In this cross-sectional study, the elementary school students’ prevalence of low back pain and the association with the demographic characters were investigated. Then, to estimate the correlation between the school bags’ weights and their non-specifics low back pain is interested. ■Methods and Materials There are 88 elementary schools in Kaohsiung and 15 are selected randomly. One class is selected by cluster sampling in grade 5 and grade 6 from each sampled school. 1063 samples are collected. Platform scales are used to evaluate the weights of students’ school packs, and their accurate is 0.01 kg. ■Results Response rate in this study is 95.1% (1011/1063). The students’ total prevalence of low back pain is 31.1% and 19.2% for their non-specifics low back pain (NSLBP). In the results, female (r=.088), TV viewing time (TVTIME) (r=.119) and schoolbags carrying time (r=-.101), feeling trunk hump (r=.149), and feeling their schoolbags heavy (r=.144) are the significant factors for NSLBP. After logistics regression analysis, feeling their schoolbags heavy (AOR=3.05) and feeling trunk hump (AOR=1.95∼3.16), are the effectual factors for the elementary school students’ NSLBP. TVTIME and schoolbags carrying time are also significant slightly. ■Discussion The results show that the prevalence of low back pain for our younger children is popular. Gender is not a significant predicted factor in this study, but the feeling about their schoolbags’ weight and their trunk hump have strongly associations with students’ non-specific low back pain. ■Background
There are many studies on low back pain among adults or workers in Taiwan, but few on children or adolescents. According to reports from other countries, the prevalence of children’s low back pain is about 11.6% to 50.4%, higher than predicted. For prevention, it is important to assess the prevalence of low back pain of the children in Taiwan.
■Objectives
In this cross-sectional study, the elementary school students’ prevalence of low back pain and the association with the demographic characters were investigated. Then, to estimate the correlation between the school bags’ weights and their non-specifics low back pain is interested.
■Methods and Materials
There are 88 elementary schools in Kaohsiung and 15 are selected randomly. One class is selected by cluster sampling in grade 5 and grade 6 from each sampled school. 1063 samples are collected. Platform scales are used to evaluate the weights of students’ school packs, and their accurate is 0.01 kg.
■Results
Response rate in this study is 95.1% (1011/1063).
■Discussion
The results show that the prevalence of low back pain for our younger children is popular. Gender is not a significant predicted factor in this study, but the feeling about their schoolbags’ weight and their trunk hump have strongly associations with students’ non-specific low back pain.
