The impacts of these two factors on subjects’ driving accuracy and error recovery were measured in terms of number of error turns made, and the distance they traveled until the error has been recovered. The study used within-subject methodology, which means each subject has to go through all the 3 levels of information complexity and 2 types of map orientation, which totaled 6 combinations of experiment conditions. The results showed the information complexity had slight effects on elders’ road identification. On the other hand, map orientation had very significant effects on driving accuracy, with the Track-up system caused less errors. With respect to the performance in error recovery, the results revealed that both information complexity and map orientation have significant effect while no interaction existed. It was suggested that for older drivers, complete map information is required with respect to a North-up in-vehicle navigation system, while the information demand decreased associated with a Track-up display. Further implications for the design of in-vehicle route guiding system fit for the aged were discussed from the perspectives of human cognitive capability in spatial processing. Lin, D-Y.
