In the analysis of this investigation, the case of plastic impact that corresponds to the value of zero coefficient of restitution is considered. The experimental results are presented and compared with the simulations using the generalized impulse momentum equations and Fourier method. By using the first set of modes, the velocity jump of the elastic coordinates is predicted using the algebraic generalized impulse momentum equations, while the velocity jump of the elastic coordinates associated with the second set of modes can be obtained by using the orthogonality relationship and a set of compatibility or interface conditions. The propagation of the plastic impact-induced wave motion after the change in the system topology is described using the Fourier method. The series solution obtained is used to examine the effect of the topology change on the propagation of longitudinal elastic waves in the rod. As two examples, a longitudinal plastic-impact system of a rigid body striking an elastic rod with free-free and clamped-free boundary conditions are used.
