Summary: | 碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 德國語文學系 === 89 === This thesis is concerned with two problems of the young women in Taiwan and Germany, namely the problem of self-identity and its realization and the problem of drugabuse. First, according to the culture change in the modern society, I redefined the young adult literature and displayed the literature dealing with problems of teenager’s in Germany and Taiwan.
Then I chose two works of problem literature in Taiwan, namely Liao, Hui-Ying’s Coleseeds(1982) and Yang, Xiao-Yun’s Her Development(1987) and two German novels, Irina Korschunow’s A call from Sebastian(1981) and Dagmar Chidolue’s I will do everything differently(1981) to demonstrate the process of young women’ emancipation. It includes the accusation of and revolt against the father’s authority, reflecting the image of traditional women, gender prejudice and the search for self-fulfillment. The differences between the two countries in treating these problems are compared on the basis of distinct cultural traits.
The second part focused on the German novels about problems of drugabuse. In the Trip into the Unknown(1975) by Ingeborg Bayer and Cold Turkey(1992) by Angelika Mechtel, the social and psychological factors made acute by utilitarian society, the negativ attitude of parents and peergroups, are analyzed. Furthermore, I compared the Taiwanese teenager drugnovel The Kid whom Yama rejects(1996) by Liu, Tai-Heng with the above-mentioned German drugnovels and illustrated the distinct points according to the function of youth literature, the setting of the plot and the function of the adult roles.
Finally, in order to promote the reading of young adult literature, I make some suggestions as to strategies of publishing and promoting reading materal for young adults. This includes encouraging writers to produce novels reflecting the problematic reality of youth and young adults. It is my hope that literature can fulfill the function of enlightening and guiding young people in their troubled experiences.
