The performance of wireless communication system will be severely degraded under situation when the available channels are limited while the number subscribers is still increasing day by day. To provide better quality and efficient service for all subscribers, there are two parameters, which are the directions of signal arrival and spectrum contents, should be obtained regarding signal processing. The information of signal directions of arrival can be extracted by space processing; while the spectrum contents of the signals should be handled only via time processing.
We discuss the space and time processing separately and show their performance limits at first. The study of space-time 2D processing is the main theme of this thesis. We introduce and compare three different space-time processing configurations, which are space-time joint, time-space cascade and space-time cascade processing, respectively. The performance of these space-time 2D processors is compared and shown by computer simulation results. Finally, according to experiences from joining the project of developing a smart antenna system, we use real data to simulate the patterns of ring array. These results are different from that of the ideal cases, which thus may be a good resource for system engineers or researchers.
